Herbert Lindsey Benton, Sr., 75, of Decatur, passed away at 12:38 P.M. Tuesday, October 19, 2010 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

 

Graveside services for Herbert will be held at Macon County Memorial Park, Monday, October 25, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor James LeCrone officiating.  Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.dawson-wikoff.com.  Memorials may be made in Herbert’s memory to DMH Hospice Care.  Dawson & Wikoff North Chapel is assisting the family with the services.

 

Herbert was born in Decatur, August 3, 1935, the son of Orville F. and Edna F. (Mills) Benton.  He had worked as a sales clerk for Wickes Lumber Company and Walmart and as a truck driver for both Decatur Paper Warehouse and Swift’s Ice Cream.  He enjoyed bowling, fishing and working crossword puzzles and loved going to the riverboat and gambling.  Herbert was a die-hard Cardinal baseball fan.  He married Wilma Jean Tindall March 17, 1956.  Wilma preceded him in death on Veterans’ Day, November 11, 2003.

 

Herbert is survived by three children:  Cheri Underwood and her husband Allen , Curtis Benton and his wife Tammy and Jeff Benton and his wife Tricia all of Decatur; his companion; Pam Boyd of Decatur, one daughter-in-law: Patty Benton of Moweaqua, two sisters; Beverly Woods and her husband Woody of Decatur and Patricia Lewis and her husband Kenny of Decatur.  Herbert also left seven grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his son Herbert L. Benton, Jr.

 

The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses of DMH Hospice Care and to Dr. Stephen Goetter for the loving care given to Herbert and to his family during his illness.
